The staircase came first. Everything else was planned around it.
Two apartments in a Grade II listed early Victorian building, combined into a single 5,500 sq ft home over four floors for a family. The interior was taken back to the structure and reconfigured entirely — work that took a large team of engineers and architects, and a long stretch of design time before any of it was buildable, because a sculptural stair at the centre of a listed building is a structural problem before it is a beautiful one.
Most of the detail is in the joinery. Leather and stone inserts. Full-size samples made and remade before anything was signed off. Air conditioning concealed within it throughout. And a run of drawers built to the exact dimensions of one client's shoes.
Stone was chosen with the clients in Italy and book-matched across every bathroom. The powder room is lined in hand-embroidered wallpaper made for the room. Lighting and AV were designed with specialist consultants and run on Lutron, so that nothing in the apartment announces itself.
Eighteen months from start to handover, complete down to the last object.
